5 Hard-Earned Lessons I've Learnt ,Since Starting My Business
Building a business from scratch isn’t romantic — it’s raw, real, and often uncomfortable. I’ve made the mistakes so you don’t have to.
Here are five lessons that I carry with me every day:
1. Desperation is not a business strategy.
If you rely on your business to put food on the table from day one, the pressure can cloud your judgment. Have a financial buffer. Get support. Hustle part time if you must — but make sure your basics are covered for at least 12 months.
2. Your closest contacts won’t always be your first clients.
It’s humbling. Sometimes, it’s strangers who will give you your first real shot. Focus on value, not validation from familiar faces.
3. Proof of payment > coffee meetings.
Let’s normalize being more excited about getting paid than being invited to “catch up.” Build relationships, yes — but know the difference between networking and stalling.
4. Do it for free… strategically.
In the early days, offer your services for free —not forever, but just long enough to prove what you can do and build a credible portfolio. Your work is your loudest pitch.
5. Wear all the hats — for now.
At the start, you’ll be the strategist, designer, accountant, and admin. That’s okay. As you move, you’ll attract clients who believe in your offering, and your niche will reveal itself. If you’re building something right now — keep going.
